Vacation Birding Trip

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Last week I took a 6-day vacation near Inverness, Florida, a few hundred miles northwest of where I live. No Internet, no cell phone! In addition to lots of hiking and birding, I met up with my birding pal Adrienne, who showed me where to see lots of Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers. There were plenty of birds to see, but most of the photos are of landscapes, and some other critters. I liked some photos enough to make larger versions, and I hope you look at them. For lack of a better way to organize them, photos are sorted by venue, as I visited several wildlife management areas (WMA), a state forest and a state park.

Audubon Preserve Photos

Citrus Blvd Preserve

This week I guided a USDA soil-survey team to a preserve owned by my local Audubon chapter. The preserve covers 270 acres in rural Palm City, Florida. USDA is conducting nationwide surveys of carbon sequestration in various soils, and chose our preserve for one survey.

The team dug several holes from which they collected samples. While the scientists played in the soil (“Chobee,” if anyone’s interested) I used the time to take some photos. They give you a good idea of what Florida looks like off the beaten path. (The top photo, taken from the road into the preserve, shows recent feral-hog damage. Where’s a Florida panther (scroll down) when you need one?)

Eastern Meadowlark, DuPuis WEMA Field Trip February 27, 2011

Some Audubon friends and I visited DuPuis Wildlife and Environmental Management Area (WEMA) this morning, to check on two Bald Eagle nests. The bird in the lead photo is an Eastern Meadowlark.

Birds Doing Things

Royal Tern

Members of my Audubon chapter are conducting a shorebird survey on ocean beaches and the Indian River Lagoon. I accompanied one group yesterday. We traveled by pontoon boat to several sandbars and islands in the lagoon. Eight-hundred photos later, I decided this post would feature birds doing interesting things, or at least looking interesting, rather than merely static shots.
