Florida Scrub is an upland habitat mostly consisting of relic sand dunes. As sea levels rose and fell over tens of thousands of years, Florida scrub can be found in many places, from near the Atlantic to the Highlands in the central peninsula. Naturalist and educator Steve Bass led the local (Cocoplum) chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society on a tour of Florida Scrub at Seabranch Preserve State Park, conveniently located only a few miles from me.

My birding pal and I are still trying to find Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers (RCWs). They are being reintroduced in two adjoining wildlife management areas in this part of the state, Dupuis and J.W. Corbett. We went to Dupuis a few months ago, and today we tried Corbett, located in northern Palm Beach County. We had a vague idea of where the reintroduction area was, but it took a couple of attempts to find it.

Last night, Audubon of Martin County members didn’t have to look for wildlife; the wildlife came to us. David Hitzig of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, and his family, visited our meeting, and brought along some of their friends.
