Day 4: Windermere
Woke up this morning and was nearly blinded by the light. What’s that? Why, it’s the sun! A few hundred feet up the hill from my B&B is the foot path leading to Orrest Head, a small peak with a big 360-degree view. Yesterday’s post was pretty large, so today we’ll only have one photo, a view of Windermere from the top of Orrest Head (768 ft asl, about 250 m). A bit of a slog getting up there, not helped by carrying water, apples, art supplies and ham radio equipment.
I painted for about 4 hours, interrupted by chatting with people from all over the planet, who came over to inspect my progress. About 1 pm I took a break. There are no trees on the summit, but about 50 feet down a side trail I found a nice tree and a sunny place to sit. (Non-hams may want to skip this paragraph.) Almost as soon as I got on 20 M I worked DL3UKH, for my first QSO as M/KR1S. Over the next hour I made five more Qs (two with other QRP stations), as far away as Italy, the ubiquitous I1YRL. Some EW was calling CQ DX and refused to work me. He preferred to call CQ DX with no takers than work a portable 3-W station on a hillside in England.
After that sideshow I went back up the mountain and did one more painting, before hunger and growing clouds told me it was time to go.
After dinner I walked down to the lake using a shorter route via a footpath, and found another good place to paint, but the weather has not cooperated.
