Neat Thunderbird and Firefox Add-on

Mozilla never integrated their calendar into Firefox and Thunderbird, and I think that project is a goner. About the only thing I missed after switching from Outlook was the calendar, which synched with my iPAQ. Yesterday I turned up an add-on that works in Thunderbird and Firefox, called ReminderFox.

ReminderFox adds a small icon to the program’s taskbar, which pops up a reminder box when moused over.

Double-clicking the icon opens the application, from which you can open a form to add reminders.

If you’re running Firefox (isn’t everyone?) when you visit the link, double click on the Install Now button to install it in your browser. If you want to install it in Thunderbird (Mozilla’s email, news and RSS client), right-click the button, save the file to your PC, and use Tools | Add-ons to install it.

The Firefox and Thunderbird installations create separate filenames for reminder lists. I changed the filename in Firefox so it uses the same list as Thunderbird. To do that, right-click on the icon in Thunderbird’s status bar and select Options. Click the File tab. Under ReminderFox File Location, uncheck Default, so you can double-click and copy the file location. Check Default again and close the window.

ReminderFox Options window

Moving to Firefox’s status bar, right click the icon, select Options, and click the File tab. Again uncheck Default, double-click on the file location and paste the location you copied from Thunderbird. Now both installations will stay in synch.

Thunderbird version 2.0.0.9, the latest update at this writing, seems very stable, and I’ve been using it for RSS feeds (the feed for Loose Feathers is http://forum.kearman.com/blog/index.php/?feed=rss2) and Usenet as well. If you’re still using Redmond bloatware, make a resolution to switch to Thunderbird, and definitely Firefox, in 2008.
